Prism Medical Ltd, the parent company of Waverley Glen Systems (WGS), introduced the ceiling lift to North America and pioneered the development of modern ceiling lift technology. Prism Medical addressed a significant challenge in healthcare facilities: preventing musculoskeletal injuries caused by patient lifting, transferring, and repositioning. This is particularly crucial because lifting patients is the primary cause of work-related injuries among nursing personnel. As a strong supporter of the “minimal lift” standard, Prism Medical dedicated itself to lowering costs associated with healthcare worker and client injuries and providing solutions to meet facility's needs.
Prism Medical significantly improved its Safe Patient Handling solutions by acquiring ErgoSafe Products LLC in June 2016. A leading provider of non-mechanical injury reduction products, the ErgoSafe line is renowned for its exceptional cost-effectiveness and seamless integration into any Safe Patient Handling program.
Prism Medical Ltd. amalgamated with its wholly-owned subsidiary, Waverley Glen Systems Ltd., on December 1, 2006 to form a single entity under the name "Prism Medical Ltd." This corporate reorganization allowed to reduce costs and streamline the company's corporate structure.
Prism Medical expanded its product lineup with the C series fixed ceiling lift. They also introduced innovative slings for LTC and Acute care, featuring Spacer fabric and slip fit material. Additionally, Prism introduced the Beka line of Tubs and Floor Lifts.
Between 2014 and 2016, Prism Medical Ltd made strategic acquisitions of Med Care Products, Angel Accessibility and SHHC BC's Institutional business, and Shoppers Home Health Care, expanding its offerings and presence in regions across Canada and the US.
In 2016, Handicare strategically acquired Prism Medical, uniting two industry leaders in mobility and accessibility solutions. This integration broadened Handicare’s offerings, providing an extensive range of patient handling solutions with expanded market reach. Handicare introduced the A-Series line of fixed ceiling lifts and the AP line of Portable ceiling lifts.
In 2016, Savaria launched its ceiling lift products, developed by a team of industry experts, offering increased lift cycles, quicker lifting times, and enhanced safety features.
In 2017, Savaria Corporation acquired Span-America, a top manufacturer of therapeutic support surfaces. This merger broadened Savaria's product range and enhanced its position in the medical equipment market. In 2019, Savaria welcomed Silvalea, a prominent UK-based manufacturer of patient transfer slings, into its fold, further contributing to its innovation and growth.

The acquisition of Handicare in 2021 transformed Savaria's evolution, broadening our market presence and sparking innovation in Safe Patient Handling. The integration of Handicare with Savaria's Ceiling Lift business, Span America, and Silvalea birthed the Patient Care business segment, allowing us foster innovation in the Safe Patient Handling market.
